Keeping your braces clean is extremely important, will help prevent problems and keep discomfort to a minimum.

1) Remember: Clean braces allow teeth to move faster! When teeth are clean, the mouth does not allow bacteria to grow. Because bacteria eat leftover food and make acid as a by-product, you must keep your mouth clean. If not, the bodys immune (defense) system can respond by bringing in extra blood cells which cause swelling of the gums.

This can delay tooth movement.

2) Remember: Clean teeth can move more comfortably! When gums are swollen due to poor cleanings they create pressure the body uses to signal you with pain. Those patients who keep their braces clean rarely complain of pain.

3) Remember: Braces can be harder to clean! The natural smooth surface of a tooth can almost clean itself. But, with braces we created multiple food traps. In addition, the presence of brackets on the teeth now prevents the muscular action of cheeks, lips and tongue from cleansing your teeth naturally. So, brush whenever you eat anything. It will take longer to brush!

4) Remember: Divide your mouth into quarters like dentists often do! Take 30 seconds to brush each quarter of your mouth.

5) Remember: Brush the outsides too! Many people miss the gum-line of the upper back and lower front teeth. So, close your mouth and brush the outsides of the teeth too. Clean braces should sparkle!

6) Remember: Consider cleaning aids!

a. Cleanings. Engage in more frequent cleanings at the dentist. Get your teeth cleaned three to four times a year.

b. Fluoride. Be sure to use the concentrated fluoride toothpaste we prescribe. You can also use a fluoride mouth wash. Fluoride strengthens the enamel of the teeth.

c. Manual Toothbrushes. Manual toothbrushes (small heads and soft bristles) will work best. The small heads can easily be turned to fit even the most crooked teeth. Be sure to soften the bristles with warm water before brushing. Electric toothbrushes can work, if they are of good quality. The Rota-dent toothbrush has a small tip that fits under the wires and between brackets effectively and it does last long.

d. Flossing. Flossing is critical if you want to avoid ugly puffy gums. Use our flossing aid called the Floss-Popper.
